Nürburgring 1999 |
Weather conditions became better during the outward journey. So at last most of the pack began enjoying "open air" on the last few miles over the Eifel streets.
After we entered the parking lots, the first races could be watched. Then the pilgrimage through the paddock, trying to find some bargains at all the dealer stands - classic weekend as its best.
But on the other hand, everything is painfully expensive. Without the MG Club benefits, the ticket for general admission would cost 150 DM (50 Pound Sterling/$80 USD). And you missed some guys while looking through the race programs:
No Stanley Mann with his Bentleys, no Midgets or Frogeyes, hardly any MG's - two TD's, two MGB's, one (1) MGA...
But maybe we are just spoiled:
Of course, a fantastic crosscut through the history of motor racing;
of course, the old paddock with its very own atmosphere;
of course, its interesting to visit the Brooks auction and take place in one of the top sports cars - seeing how the world looks like out of the cockpit of a Maserati...but somehow...
The club parking, for example: Sure, it was better than in the last years, but if you want to take a look over the fence - this was not so easy.
But we were there to have fun, so we made our own program! We enjoyed the day at the "Ring", made a wonderful evening tour through the Eifel. Camping is mandatory...this time at Margot and Stephan's, two club members living not far away from the "Ring".
The next day was the same procedure...racing, racing, racing. A last visit at the club parking area - then home again.
The bottom line? It was a nice weekend - the people, the tour - but the Grand Prix is more and more the occasion, not the purpose. Time to act for the organizer, I think!
