K & N filters | ![]() | for the MGA |
The recently installed Peter Burgess cylinder head should be fitted with K & N filters. But the phone conversations with MG dealers in Germany were very frustrating - the catalogue price for the filters was around 80 DEM (40 US$), but prices are rising up to 120 DEM for one filter. Too much!
But there must be other possibilities. And, of course, there are. Some US-dealer are able to deliver the filter elements only, without th chrome housings. Suits my needs very well, because I am not a friend of too much brightware in the engine compartment.
Ordered via internet, Jeff Zorn delivered some days later the filter elements right on my kitchen table, asking 28 US$ for each element. Some MGA Bulletin board members have installed the K & N's before, mentioning that richer needles are not mandatory. So, hurry up into the garage...
Here a look in the very original engine compartment. for changing the filters, only the top of the filters has to be disassembled. A little tricky with the fingers, but not a real problem. Here both filters to compare (left original, right K & N). The only "problem": A little cut-out has to be made to make sure that the valve cover breather will not be plugged. Here it is! The optical impact is nearly as original, no more brightwear added - but this is a question of personal taste.
And the bottom line? Of course no new needles were needed, the carbs are only adjusted a little richer (jet height was set to 1.7 mm down from the bridge1.7 mm instead of 1.2 mm before). It seems that the engine revs more freely, and it has a more "punch" between 2.000 and 3.500 revs.
Anyway: If I can get hands on a rolling road, an engine test will be made - I am very curious about the real power...
